The things I do...

Projects & services

Below are a few of the other things I get up to. If you have a question or wish to discuss anything, just drop me a line.

film & television

I have worked as an off-screen consultant as well as an on-screen commentator on several television specials and documentaries. I have also worked as an advisor about costuming and material culture for several productions. In addition I have written or advised on several screenplays, including the Documentary "Franklin: Five Hours in the Valley of Death," which won a Regional Emmy and a Telly Award in 2007.

Lectures and Presentations

I often speak to Round Tables, Historical Societies, and other groups about various subjects. My special area of interest is the Period from 1750 to 1870, including the Federal and Jacksonian Period, and the American Civil War and its aftermath. I've lectured on such diverse subjects as crime, medicine, military history, clothing, personal etiquette, folklore, and maritime history. I am available to speak, and I don't mind travel. Message me if you're interested.

writing and other such activities

I am an author with two books in print and working on more. In addition I've contributed articles to several magazines and newspapers about various subjects. I've also consulted and collaborated with other writers on joint works in the past. If you have questions or would like to know more, don't hesitate to contact me.

Research

Up until fairly recently, I would have probably said I was happiest in an archive. It's the backbone of everything else I do, and I am forever running down obscure leads. Thus far I have over twenty years' experience as a researcher, and it's a task I truly enjoy. I am available, so if you have questions let me know. If I can't help you, I may know someone who can...
